Mozilla Firefox &
Mozilla Thunderbird » Currently my favourite Web Browser and Email Client. Not only are they Open Source and Free, they are
standards compliant (any website that doesn’t work in Firefox is a poorly designed website), and they are also cross platform, so I can use
them both in Linux with virtually the exact same features (platform dependant). They are built on the Gecko rendering engine and
aim to takeover from the Mozilla suite of applications. This Website was designed for use with Mozilla Firefox, any differences
in appearence of this site using Internet Explorer is down to Microsoft and not myself. Any email you send to me will be picked up by Mozilla Thunderbird, whether
I’m on Linux or Windows.
MozillaZine Forums » I regularly view these forums to get the latest builds of both Firebird and Thunderbird.
You can get optimised builds for your specific processor or system type. They also have plenty of discussions too. A must see site
for anyone interested in Mozilla.
After hearing great things about Gentoo i though i would give it ago about 9 months ago. Sadly it failed to compile on my older system. A few weeks
ago i tried it on my upgraded system and it compiled the first part fine, but i had a bit of trouble with my nForce 2 drivers. I gave up at that point
but when i have a free weekend this term I’m sure i’ll give it another stab. See their site for more details. Needless to say like most linux
distros it is free to download via their website and worldwide mirror sites.
» UPDATE : I have now got Gentoo up and running with kernel
me get on with my exam revision. I still dual boot it with Windows XP, but I em anjoying learning about Gentoo properly now.
Fedora Core 1 »
My current system used to dual boot with Fedora Core 1(redhat 10) freely downloaded from the net (see the interests page for a download mirror list). Not only
does it detect my hardware corectly it also runs quite fast too. I have been using Red Hat on and off for a few years back to Red Hat 5, but i only
started seriously with Red Hat 8 last year at University, as it was their choice of Linux OS as well. I upgraded to Red Hat 9 earlier this year,
but the Red Hat consumer product has no been superseeded by the Fedora Core product, sponsered and endorsed by Red Hat themselves. It is basically
the next consumer version of Red Hat.
Red Hat Linux »
Red Hat have taken a brake from the consumer league now, and rely on the Fedora Project to do it for them (see above). But they
still produce business orientated versions of Red Hat Linux. Their support and updates for consumer version of Red Hat will be ending at the end of this year for
pre-version 9, and ending for version 9 next year.
Various other distros:
I have had my web hsting with Valcato for over a year now, and they have become very reliable. They are also very affordable too with monthly payment
plans on all the packagaes they offer. For more information visit their website, or check out their forum.
1-2-3-Reg »
I have had this domain with 1-2-3-Reg for over 6 months now, and they offer great features for all their domains and make it eay to change almost any
property of your domain such as DNS info, name servers etc, they also offer webmail. Their prices are also very competetive. If you need a domain name go to them.
Ebuyer bring better value to the consumer PC market, offering a massive range of products at a reasonable price. They also have a review system,
unlike many component websites, that allows other buyers to comment on each product and let you see real people’s opinions, good or bad.
Play.com »
Play offer a wide range of mainly DVD’s, but also music cd’s/dvd’s and computer games, at bargain prices. They have a huge range with low prices
on virtually 99% of thier range. They also offer free delivery, so if you can wait a few days for them to arrive free in the post you can save
loads on your DVD collection.
Amazon »
As you will know, Amazon stock everything from books to pots & pans. They also offer great discounts on books, better for more expensive books,
so keep an eye on those text book savings. The “daddy” of all retail websites, Amazon offer free delivery off any orders over £25. They can also
help with the sale of your old purchases to other customers at knock down prices.
Blackstar SendIt.com»
SendIt.com (formerly Blackstar) was the first place I ever ordered online a few years ago. They stock DVD’s and videos at bargain prices. They had introduced
delivery charges a while back, but have now removed them and their prices are getting even more competitive at the moment.
